Low tech - ancient inventions with an huge impact: Archimedes' screw

Image
Archimedes' screw, a simple yet ingenious device, has played a surprisingly significant, though often unsung, role in world history across the centuries. Its impact isn't always dramatic, but its steady contributions to agriculture, water management, and even industry have been undeniable. Here's a breakdown of its role: 1. Ancient World & Its Initial Impact (Approx. 3rd Century BCE - 5th Century CE): Attribution & Origins: While often attributed to Archimedes, the exact origins are debated. Some scholars believe earlier forms might have existed in Assyria. Regardless, Archimedes' contribution likely involved a refined and more efficient design. Irrigation in Agriculture: This was its primary function in the ancient world. In arid regions like Egypt and parts of the Mediterranean, the screw was used to lift water from lower bodies (canals, rivers, etc.) to irrigate fields. This enabled: Increased Crop Yields: Allowing for cultivation in areas previously unsui...

Search Engine Strategies Perhaps the most important and inexpensive strategy is to rank high for your preferred words on the main search engines in "organic" or "natural" searches (as opposed to paid ads). Search engines send robot "spiders" to index the content on your webpage, so let's begin with steps to prepare your web pages for optimal indexing. The idea here is not to trick the search engines, but to leave them abundant clues as to what your webpage is about. 1. Write a Page Title. Write a descriptive title for each page of 5 to 8 words. Remove as many "filler" words from the title, such as "the," "and," etc. This page title will appear hyperlinked on the search engines when your page is found. Plan to use some descriptive keywords along with your business name on your home page. 2. Write a Description and Keyword META Tag. The description should be a sentence or two describing the content of the webpage, using the ...

Google Reader – In addition to tracking your feeds, Google’s popular RSS reader allows you to star items (like in Gmail), view trends in your feeds and reading habits, and recently added an option to read feeds offline. iGoogle – Formerly known as Google Personalized Home, iGoogle allows you to include RSS feeds as part of your custom start page. Netvibes - This personal homepage provider includes hundreds of “modules” you can add to your page from Hotmail to your Flickr photos, but also lets you create your own modules by simply entering an RSS feed URL. Pageflakes – Another personalized homepage provider, Pageflakes functions similar to Netvibes, letting you select from pre-made modules or create your own by adding an RSS feed. My Yahoo! – Still the most widely used custom homepage on the Web, My Yahoo now allows you to add RSS feeds alongside your weather, stock quotes, and news. Similar to Netvibes and Pageflakes, My Yahoo allows you to re-arrange your feeds with drag and drop f...

How to: Installing Multiple Blogs

Image
Multiple Blogs Through Multiple Installs If you want multiple blogs using WordPress, you must actually install each separately (that is, as a separate WordPress installation). You can do this whether you have the ability to create multiple databases or are limited to a single database. Multiple Databases You'll need a separate MySQL database for each blog you plan to install. If you have not yet created these, basic instructions are found here . The wp-config.php file will vary for each installation. The lines to change are: define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress'); // The name of the database define('DB_USER', 'username'); // Your MySQL username define('DB_PASSWORD', 'password'); // ...and password DB_NAME will be the name of the individual database created for that blog. If you are using different user logins for each database, edit DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD to reflect this, as well. Upload each wp-config.php fi...

Scientists Invent 30 Year Continuous Power Laptop Battery

Image
Your next laptop could have a continuous power battery that lasts for 30 years without a single recharge thanks to work being funded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The breakthrough betavoltaic power cells are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source. As the radioactive material decays it emits beta particles that transform into electric power capable of fueling an electrical device like a laptop for years. Although betavoltaic batteries sound Nuclear they’re not, they neither use fission/fusion or chemical processes to produce energy and so (do not produce any radioactive or hazardous waste). Betavoltaics generate power when an electron strikes a particular interface between two layers of material. The Process uses beta electron emissions that occur when a neutron decays into a proton which causes a forward bias in the semiconductor. This makes the betavoltaic cell a forward bias diode of sorts, similar in some respects to a photovoltaic (s...
